And now, for a really great show

What do Supreme Collagen, Bella Flora, ecollegey and SOS Cuisine all have in common? If you’re thinking “I haven’t a clue” I agree. I haven’t a clue either. Today, they are 4 individual businesses each with their own mission and agenda.

Last weekend, however, they were all exhibitors at the 2011 Eat Well and Live Green Expo. And what a group it was. Boisterous, busy, engaged. Over 300 exhibitors involved in health and wellness were sampling, selling and occasionally yelling to be heard in the crowd.

The show, geared to consumers, brought in over 16,000 people over three days. From golden agers to health savvy students, consumers were reading labels and looking for innovation and bursts of excellence.

As a consumer, I certainly wasn’t disappointed. The apple cider vinegar soap has yet to be sampled but the pure, coconut fibre scrubbing pad works like a charm. The soap nuts were incredibly intriguing – harvested from a tree in India, they completely replace laundry soap. They are reusable, compostable and biodegradable and, according to the www.ecoeteco.com, they efficiently wash all types of fabrics. Odorless, they can be used in traditional machines as well as the new high efficiency washing machines. Just toss 4 nuts in a cotton bag and let nature do the rest. Fascinating.

As an exhibitor, Grandma Emily’s sampled our Organic Pumpkin Almond Crunch. The words ‘high in Omega-3’s’ had quite an impact. The not-too-sweet snack, new to many consumers, was quickly adopted after just one little nibble.

Our stock vanished rapidly. The initial 500g portions were gone the first day and we reduced the size of the portion to allow more people to try the product. At a $5 cost for 350g, there was little resistance.

There’s more fun ahead as we gear up to exhibit at The National Women’s Show – April 1st, 2nd and 3rd at Montreal’s Palais des Congres. Hope to see you there – Andrea

In the Driver’s Seat

In his book, The Power of Story, Jim Loehr writes, “you are the principal architect of your story.  If you have any hope of living out your best story, you need to have a maximum amount of high-quality energy.”

Nothing is more important for that high quality energy to flow than a healthy, vibrant body.  It is the car we climb into every morning when we awake that loyally carries us through our day.  It needs tune ups, oil changes, regular maintenance and, of course, the occasional lube job.  All kidding aside, it is our vehicle of choice for this lifetime and it deserves our care and respect. (more…)

We Are What We Feed

Welcome to Grandma Emily’s blog.  Yes friends, we are what we feed.  The story goes like this:

An Ojibwe grandmother is walking in the woods with her granddaughter.  She explains to the 10 year old, “Aendra, inside you are two wolves.  One is the wolf of love, kindness, compassion, and an open heart.  The other wolf is the wolf of fear, despair, and powerlessness.  These two constantly do battle inside of you.”  “But grandmother,” asks the child, “which one wins?”  “The one you feed,”  answers the wise grandmother.

And so, this blog is born.  A few loving, positive, words inspired by my Grandmother Emily to encourage and spark positive growth for a journey filled with well being and great health.

What better place to begin this feeding frenzy than SUPERFOODS?  They are all around us.  They are the lowly oat flake, sesame seed and lemon.  They are the exotic acai fruit, maca root and goji berry.  We will be highlighting many superfoods starting with an appropriate choice for this time of year – the pumpkin seed.

Halloween reminds me of one of nature’s perfect foods.  No, no, I’m not referring to a Tootsi Roll – although that is a close second.  I‘m referring to the undervalued pumpkin seed.  Shelled and gently dry roasted, pumpkin seeds can be sprinkled on a bowl of breakfast granola, tossed into a lunchtime salad or stirred into a hot soup. Fall’s ubiquitous pumpkin is truly a superfood waiting to be embraced.  Pumpkin seeds are great mind, body and brain food. They:

  • protect against osteoporosis
  • help maintain healthy kidneys and intestines
  • regulate cholesterol
  • help against depression
  • help hair and nails keep their youthful shine
  • aid diabetics
  • relieve constipation
  • have anti-inflammatory properties
  • help maintain good prostate health  -  tell your men

A truly natural way to give your body a dose of life-giving minerals and vitamins.  At Grandma Emily’s, you can find dry roasted pumpkin seeds in our pumpkin almond crunch, superfood crunch, organic maple peanut butter granola, trail mix and harvest mix.

With Love, Andrea

Share with us your grandmother’s words of wisdom.
