New Year’s Solution #2

Now that you’ve broken the fast in a fast, easy and decidedly healthy way (see New Year’s Solution #1) you’re back on track to a healthy lifestyle.  Try to take your morning tonic at least 15 minutes before you eat anything to get the full benefits.  No need for expensive detox programs – a glass of lemon and water every day will do the job just fine.  Now, you need to follow that up with healthy fuel.

Ode to the Oat

It never makes me bloat
I feel nimble as a goat
Whether hot or cold
For young and old
It’s eliminating benefits I highly tote.

Eaten as granola or as a bowl of hot porridge, oats are your best breakfast friend.  A complex carb that tastes great, is filling and nutritious, and won’t bloat you up, oats beats wheat hands down. (more…)

New Year’s Solution #1

Last year, the United States passed a childhood nutrition bill – the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.

“With over seventeen million children living in food insecure households and one in every three children in America now considered overweight or obese, schools are often on the front lines of our national challenge to combat childhood obesity……”

There was actually bi-partisan support for this bill which aims to increase access to healthy food for low income kids. It also aims to educate children about making healthy choices that will turn into lifelong healthy eating habits.  The bill even mentions creating local farm to school networks and creating school gardens as well as improving access to fresh water during meal times and improving nutritional standards.  Bravo!  WAKE UP CALL to food manufacturers.
